Geography overview:
The Reno / Carson City area is located in northwestern Nevada in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada range. Carson City, the capital of the state of Nevada, is 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Reno, in the Carson River Valley. Lake Tahoe is located 15 (24 kilometers) miles to the west. The Reno / Carson City area is bordered to the west by the state of California. Reno is located along the western border of Nevada in the Truckee Meadows Valley, 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of the Sierra Nevada mountains and Lake Tahoe, one of the world's largest alpine lakes. Areas east of Reno and Carson City offer beautiful high-desert flying with several small airfields.
